5 ROWAN - Mrs Fawcett

Welcome to Year 5!

Mrs Fawcett:

You can find out what we are currently learning on our Curriculum Newsletter.

Your teachers this year are Mrs Fawcett (5 Rowan) and Miss Newton (5 Larch). We are supported by our amazing team of teaching assistants, including Miss Netherwood, Mrs Wilby, Mrs Smith, Mrs Brown, Mrs Shawden and Mrs Gelder.

There is an expectation that your child reads a part of their home reader book every night. Either a grown up at home or your child themselves can sign their reading record and comment on which page they have read up to. Your child must bring their home reader and reading record into school every day. Every time they read 5 times at home, they receive a raffle ticket which gives them the chance to win a book of their choice at the end of each half term. All raffle tickets are kept throughout the year for the drawing of the grand prize at the end of the summer term.

Homework tasks are set via Mathletics and Spelling Shed. Spelling tests are conducted on a Monday and new spellings given out for the following week, alongside one piece of grammar based written homework which must be returned by the following Monday. This homework is based on grammar work we have been completing throughout the week. Your child is able to practice their spellings by logging onto spelling shed (username and password on the inside of their reading record). If your child does not have internet access at home, Miss Newton and Mrs Fawcett run a homework club on a Monday and Wednesday lunchtime for children to voluntarily attend if they would like to use the school’s computers to complete their work, or if they would like some extra practice. It is also important that your child regularly logs onto and uses TT rock stars and reading eggs/express. Again, passwords can be found on the inside of their reading records.

This half term, outdoor PE is taking place on a Wednesday. Please send your child to school in a weather appropriate outdoor PE kit, along with some long socks and shin pads (if you have any, we do have plenty of spares) for their hockey lessons. Swimming takes place every Tuesday morning at Sun Lane Leisure Centre in Wakefield. The lessons are led by two swimming coaches and supported by Mrs Smith and our team of support staff who accompany the children. Your child needs to bring their swimming kit and towel in a separate bag every Tuesday so they are able to fully participate in the lessons. Please note that as swimming is part of the national curriculum, it is mandatory that your child attends these sessions.

Finally, if you have any questions or comments, please speak to your child’s teacher at the end of the school day or, if you prefer, email them using the address at the top of this page.

Art, teamwork & stick Insects!

Year 5 have been looking at the artist Banksy and we have been using his stencil idea to create artwork.

Creative Writing Competition

Announcing the start of our Year 5 creative writing competition! Our classes are full of children who love writing, and we want them to be able to enjoy it even more. So Miss Newton and Mrs Fawcett would like you all to take a look at these Holes based ideas and see what you can create at home. This is a fun competition- you don't have to enter- but if you have a passion for writing and want to show us what you can do, then please enter! You can enter as many pieces of writing as you would like, but we would like your submissions handed to your class teacher (either Miss Newton or Mrs Fawcett) by Friday 26th November please. Good luck- there may even be for some prizes for winners and entries! 😄
