0KB - Mrs Barrett

Welcome to 0KB!

Mrs Barratt - kbarratt@st-peters.wakefield.sch.uk

Our Class Motto was made up of words chosen by the children. These are:

“We are: Listening, Kind, Helpful, Friendly, Learning”

In foundation stage we plan stimulating and exciting learning opportunities indoors and outdoors to engage the children. Our provision areas include; sand, water, role play, writing, maths, construction and small world.

These areas all facilitate opportunities for your children to explore, investigate and wonder, finding out and learning in the most exciting way – through play!

Throughout the school day we have structured time which includes adult led learning. This structure includes; daily phonics, maths, literacy and topic activities. We also include P.E, PSE, Music and RE in our Foundation Stage curriculum. Please see our timetable for more information.

Useful Parent Information

The school day

The school day starts at 8:45 and finishes at 3pm. Please make sure your child arrives promptly at school for 8:45 to ensure they are present for register and ready to start learning. If for any reason, your child arrives after this time, please go to the school office. If you will be late to pick up your child at home time, please ring the office to inform them as soon as possible. For safety reasons, children need to be collected by a known adult, so if someone new is collecting your child please inform a member of staff.

Water Bottles

The children are encouraged throughout the day to drink water to ensure they are well hydrated. Please send your child to school with a named water bottle.

Please note these should not be filled with juice.

Reading

Reading is an important and fun part of children’s learning. Children will read a few times a week in a Guided Reading session as part of a group. They also bring home a Reading Scheme book to read and enjoy with an adult. We encourage children to read every day at home. Please sign your child’s reading record book to say you have read with your child. There is a comments section for any comments you wish to make. Your child will have the option to swap their book on a daily basis. Please ask them to take it out of their book bag on a morning and put it in your class book box to ensure it is changed. This will be outside the classroom door.

PE

In Upper Foundation Stage we have access to the outdoor area at all times; therefore, your child has access to a range of fantastic gross motor opportunities daily. These include; ball games, running, jumping, skipping and climbing skills.

We also have one P.E session per week. On PE days please send your child in their PE Kit. They will remain in this for the whole day in school. Children need to wear a white t-shirt, dark shorts / jogging bottoms and trainers. We will be doing PE outdoors this half term. Please ensure your child has a school jumper / cardigan to wear outdoors. All kit should be clearly named. Children with long hair need a bobble to tie it back during the session and children with earrings will need them removing that day.

Our PE day will be on a Tuesday.

Uniform

Your child should wear uniform which follows our school policy. In Foundation Stage your child will need appropriate clothing all year round for outdoor play. In winter, please make sure you send your child to school with a waterproof coat, hat, scarves and gloves.

In summer, please send your child with a sun hat and sun cream having already been applied at home.

It is a good idea to send a pair of wellies to school with your child for all year round as we will use them daily when playing on the grass, in the mud kitchen and for water play.

Please remember to label ALL items of clothing and shoes as this will help return lost property as soon as possible.

Learning Journey

The Foundation stage staff continually observe the children in the setting and celebrate their wonderful progress. We share this progress on the 2simple learning journey app. Please ensure school have an up to date email address for you to receive these updates. The first update will be sent once the children have settled in. We hope you look forward to seeing what they have been up to!

We hope your child enjoys their time in Upper Foundation Stage. If you have any concerns or queries, please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of staff in the Foundation Stage Unit and arrange an appropriate time to chat.

50 Things to do before you're 5

In Foundation Stage, we are doing the ‘50 Things To Do Before You're Five’ Challenge. We will complete challenges and update you with our progress.

We hope that the activities will be lots of fun for the children and completing it will contribute to their catch up learning that they have missed during lockdown.

We have enjoyed singing songs and learning to play instruments within a song.

The Gingerbread Man

We have really enjoyed our book of the week 'The Gingerbread Man'.  We have retold the story in the small world tray using the repeated refrains from the story.  We have followed instructions to make gingerbread men in our home corner and we have loved finding the 20 missing gingerbread men on a number hunt outside.

We also set up an experiment to find out what would happen to a gingerbread man if we put him in water.  We made predictions and used super vocabulary such as hard, crunchy, soggy, bendy and crumble to describe the gingerbread man before and after the experiment.

England does the Daily Mile

We really enjoyed taking part in this event.  We ran around the school field 3 times and were really proud of ourselves. You can view all the photos here.

We love spending time in our outdoor environment and learning through exploration.

The Three Little Pigs

This week we have been reading the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We have enjoyed retelling the story with actions and creating our own story maps. We have experimented with straw, sticks and bricks to see which material is the strongest to build a house out of.

We have enjoyed learning about why we celebrate St George's Day.  We have read the story of Saint George and the dragon and then acted out the story.  We had some very brave St. George's and some ferocious dragons!  We also enjoyed designing and making our own shield and building our own castles with 3D shapes.

We have been finding out about the lifecycle of a chick.  We have been so lucky to have the most wonderful learning experience, watching some eggs hatch into chicks.  We have been waiting patiently for our 6 chicks to hatch.  We have been keeping the eggs warm in an incubator.  On Wednesday we were really excited as we watched them hatch.  They are making lots of chirping noises!

We have enjoyed creating artwork inspired by our World Book Day book The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse by Charlie Mackesy.

Enjoying Christmas Dinner

Christmas Concert

You can view our Christmas Concert here.

PE Sessions

Children in UFS have enjoyed PE sessions with a sports coach this half term. The children have been developing a range of skills such as coordination, running, jumping, spatial awareness and changing direction.  They have also started to develop their ability to dribble, roll, throw and catch a ball.

We have been learning from home and Mrs Barrett and Mrs Squires have been very impressed with all our efforts.  All the children have been superstars!  We have been on shape hunts around our homes, made repeating patterns, measured objects been on sound hunts, practiced our letter and number formation, played phonics games, made Christmas crafts and wrote a letter to Santa.  Even though we haven’t been at school, we have been very busy.

We have been reading the story 'Stickman'’. The children brought in a stick from home to make into their very own stick person. The children made these independently and they all look fantastic. They have enjoyed acting out the story with their stick people.

We have used equipment such as counters, Numicon, pictures and number lines to help us add different amounts together to solve simple addition sentences.

We have enjoyed investigating light and dark by setting up a dark den in the classroom and exploring change with various light sources.

Creating repeating and symmetrical patterns

Children In Need Day

We have been learning about a special Hindu festival called Diwali.  We have looked in non-fiction books to find out about how the festival is celebrated.  We have enjoyed making Diva lamps, Mehndi hand patterns, Rangoli patterns and retelling the story of Rama and Sita with the Diwali small world figures.

Harvest Festival

Please visit the Video Resource Centre to view our Harvest Festival.
We have enjoyed observing seasonal changes on our Autumn walk.

We have loved reading the story of 'The Gruffalo'.  We have listened carefully for the rhyming words in the story and discussed the story setting and describe the characters.  We have enjoyed retelling the story using small world props and language from the story.

Healthy Foods

As part of our 'All about Me' topic we have discussed the importance of eating fruit and vegetables to keep our bodies healthy and we sorted foods into healthy and unhealthy groups.

We enjoyed going on a shape hunt in the outdoor environment and we used 2d shapes to create a picture.

The children have settled well into their new class and we are extremely proud of them.  We have started our new topic 'All about Me'!  We have enjoyed talking about our families and creating a self-portrait using paint and collage materials.  We have read the story of 'Funny Bones' and enjoyed learning the correct names for bones in our body.  We practised our cutting skills and cut straws to different lengths to create a skeleton picture.
We enjoyed our first PE session with a Sports Coach.  We listened carefully to instructions and travelled in different ways.
