Mrs H Fawcett, KS2 SENCo

Mrs J Gallagher (KS1) and Mrs H Fawcett (KS2) are the SENCOs here at St Peter's and Clifton CE VC Primary School. Emma Fieldhouse is our SEND Governor. We recognise that partnership with parents/carers is very important in helping children to do as well as they can at school. If you are worried about your child’s learning or progress please feel to contact us and we will try our best to support you and your child.

What are Special Educational Needs?

“A learning difficulty or disability is a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age.”

We provide SEND support for students with significant needs in the following areas:

  • Communication and Interaction
  • Cognition and Learning
  • Social, mental and emotional health
  • Sensory and /or Physical

How can St Peter's and Clifton support my child?

We understand that in addition to quality first teaching for all children, we may need to change the curriculum, environment and teaching and learning methods to help accommodate children with SEND to ensure they are learning and making progress that is suitable for them. Following the St Peter’s and Clifton School Spirit we give our children, including those with SEN, the skills that will enable them to be fully included in the community of the school.

We aim to enable all our children to have access to as broad and balanced a curriculum as possible. Work in all subject areas is differentiated to enable all children to succeed and make progress from their own starting point. As a school we believe, God created every child as an individual with their own talents, gifts and needs.

Staff regularly take part in training and CPD with the support of the SENCO to ensure that best practice runs throughout the whole school, this includes managing medical conditions such as asthma and allergies.

Our school is an accessible school as we have lifts to all levels. We also have disabled toilets that are accessible if required. There is disabled parking available also.

If you are thinking about choosing St Peter's and Clifton Primary School for your child, we welcome you to make an appointment to visit our school so you can find out what we can offer to meet any specific needs.

How we address any concerns

At St Peter's, we continually monitor and assess the learning and progress of all children and we make sure we follow the guidance of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice (2014). If we have concerns about your child’s learning we will talk with you as soon as possible and discuss strategies to put in place to support your children such as extra or different equipment, interventions or nurture work. Meetings are also carried out throughout the year between the SENCO and parents to ensure that children’s progress is kept up to date. A My Support Plan (MSP) or Health Care Plan may be written with you and we may ask for further advice from other professionals such as School Nursing and Educational Psychologists. These plans will be reviewed with you on a termly basis at least.

All children develop at their own pace but if your child shows significant concern, and has the most complex or severe needs, a request may be made to the Local Authority, which will result in a more detailed assessment being carried out. This is a legal process where the Local Authority will look at all the information and decide whether an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) is required. This a document that describes your child’s needs and what needs to be done by Education, Health and Social Care to ensure those needs are being met.

Health Care Plans

Health Care plans are put into place at St Peter's for children with allergies and health conditions. These Health Care Plans are in place with emergency contacts for the teacher to access in case of an emergency, along with directions. For example, a nut allergy would have directions on how to administer an epi-pen or Pirition.

Health care plans are composed with the teacher and parents, and if needed a nursing team to ensure they are an efficient document.

Secondary Transition

At St Peter’s and Clifton we are here to support your child’s next steps towards secondary school. We would advise you to start to consider your options in Year 5.

If your child has an EHCP or My Support Plan we begin to look at and discuss secondary transition at the reviews of these documents in Year 5.

In Year 6 annual reviews are brought forward to the Autumn term, sometimes the SENCO from the secondary school may attend this meeting if they are available. During the summer term, the SENCO from the relevant secondary schools will join us for a transition meeting to share information to support the transition process. Children with SEND are able to visit the schools for additional visits in the summer term to help them feel confident with the transition process. We also work with the children in school to relieve any worry or anxiety that they may have.
