  • Safer Sleep Week (14th-20th March 2022)

Fri 11 Mar 2022 Kathryn Whitehead

A number of cases have recently highlighted the dangers of parents co-sleeping with young babies; risks are significantly increased if the parent has taken drugs or even a moderate amount of alcohol. The risk is associated with the possibility that the parents can accidentally suffocate the child by laying over them. As a result, the Children’s Public Health team are working closely with partners to ensure that accurate, consistent and clear messages are shared with new parents and families across the Wakefield district.

The Lullaby Trust are a nationally recognised organisation who have developed a number of resources and online training opportunities for professionals and those working with children and families; these are being used to support the roll out of information locally.

Wakefield Council will be supporting Safer Sleep Week (14-20 March 2022) which is the national awareness campaign targeting anyone looking after a young baby. It aims to raise awareness of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and safer sleep advice that reduces the risk of it occurring. You can find more information on their website here.
